10 + 100 Creative Commons Christmas Songs [Update]

Christmas Tree

So, it's Christmas today (or it will be tomorrow, depending on where you live). Wouldn't it be nice if you had a bunch of freely and legally available Christmas songs you could listen to all day? Burn on CDs and hand over to your relatives? Share with your friends without the fear of being sued to death by big record labels?

Well, here's a list of 110 256 songs which are all explicitly released under a Creative Commons license (no, I did not consider songs which are merely "podsafe"!) and thus can be shared, listened to, and sometimes even modified freely. There's a great variety in style, mood, and genre of the songs: some traditional, some contemporary, some happy, some sad, and some just plain funny. So here's the list:

Single MP3s:

Compilations:

Additional songs 2006:

Additional songs 2008:

This list is by no means complete, I'm sure. So if you happen to know some more Creative Commons licensed Christmas music, please leave a comment! I'd love to hear about it.

(Btw., the nice image on the right is taken from the Wikipedia. The author is Malene Thyssen, and the image is dual-licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License 1.2 and the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 2.5 license)

Merry Christmas everyone!

Update 2008-12-21: Added more songs for 2008. Updated/marked broken links.
Update 2006-12-22: Added more songs for 2006 :)
Update 2005-12-26: Added "Homeless Babe". Added "Christmas Impro".

type of Creative Commons

Hello, I am interested in making chrtsma on line to congratulate Christmas to my companions of company and my clients. what type of Creative Commons license could i use for it?
Thanks

Thanks

Thanks, this is a brilliant selection of great songs. :)

Thank you a lot for these

Thank you a lot for these songs. They brought me to an interesting idea. It's a fact, that one of the main ways of celebrating Christmas is of course by singing Christmas songs. The best way to do it is to have a good instrumental back music to support your singing.
I couldn’t find any articles online, which would direct people to where they could find proper karaoke tracks for Christmas songs. So what I did – I listen through almost a hundred songs and picked out the best ones I could find for each song. I assure you, that they are in good quality and you can listen to all of them in one article. This isn't a scam - you don't have to make any accounts or to pay for them, this article is solely for informative purposes.
Again, thank you for directing me to writing this article =)
Link to the article is here: http://fr.ee/article/free-full-christmas-karaoke-songs-not-midi
Have a great singing experience =)

Awesome.

Gotta love the Creative Commons. Plenty of different music to choose from thanks and keep up the good work.

How Great Is This...

What a great idea, and without all the copyright limitations to boot. Way to go, this is going to put smiles on a lot of peoples faces. They are really nice songs to share with your friends and family. Thank-you.

Hi there, just wanted to

Hi there, just wanted to clarify with you... I am a pre school teacher of 3 - 5 year olds and I am making a dvd slideshow using all the photos we have taken during the year. I would like to use some of the christmas songs on this site as background music. Have I read correctly that this is legal and ok? I will be making about 100 copies, they will not be sold and the centre is a non profit organisation. They are to be christmas presents to all the families.

Creative Commons licenses

Yes, that should be ok. Note that I am NOT the author of the songs, I just collected links to them. But all songs here which are released under a Creative Commons license are freely usable for non-commercial purposes (as long as your "derivative work" is also under the same license, usually), and some are even usable for commercial purposes (which is not relevant in your case, though).

But please check the exact license of each song you want to use, just to be sure. But unless I made some mistake all of the songs on this page should be Creative Commons licensed.

Cool post

Cool post...
Here's my post about Creative Commons licenses:

Use of christmas songs for pre school dvd?

Hi there, just wanted to clarify with you... I am a pre school teacher of 3 - 5 year olds and I am making a dvd slideshow using all the photos we have taken during the year.
I would like to use some of the christmas songs on this site as background music. Have I read correctly that this is legal and ok? I will be making about 100 copies, they will not be sold and the centre is a non profit organisation. They are to be christmas presents to all the families.

I have been searching and everything I find has had strings attached. This is the first place I have found where it appears free and legal.

Thanks very much

DVD

Hi, using my photos is fine, they are explicitly licensed freely (see here).

The songs were not created by me so you have to check the respective license of each song. Most of them use the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike (or similar) licenses, which do allow non-commercial usage (sometimes even commercial usage), so yes, I think you can use most of them. But better check each song's license.

Hope that helps, Uwe.

In 8th grade, we sang a song with the words, "Come joyfully sing, a savior to the earth. ......refrain was "What a wonder, what a joy, God has sent a baby boy. Anyone know this song and all the words?

Did you ever find out the name and words to this song

Ive been trying to find out the same information for days now.

"Calypso Christmas" by Natalie Sleeth

My wife was looking for the name of the song as well and we found it here....

on using the songs

I was wondering if it's legal to implement your song as a part of a file like a flash presentation and distribute it for economic gain purposes?

thanks

Licenses

None of these songs are created by me, so I'm the wrong person to ask. If the license of the song explicitly allows commercial usage (e.g. the CC-by-sa does) then yes, you can do that. If the license doesn't allow commercial usage you'll have to contact the author and ask for permission.

HTH, Uwe.

Original Christmas music

How would one go about submitting one's music to be included in your list that "...is not complete...."?

I would like to use some of

I would like to use some of the Christmas songs on this site as background music. Have I read correctly that this is legal and OK? I am also starting to have pregnancy symptoms and Christmas music really help to calm me I start to think about it. Just had my bridal shower last week as well could have used some of the music then :)

Song licenses

The songs are all under _some_ Creative Commons license, so most should be fine to use for non-commercial usage, some are even OK for commercial use. Please check the license of the respective song you want to use, though.

Submission

Write an email to me or post links here in the comments. I'll only add "free" music in the sense of a free license (Creative Commons or public domain), though.

Uwe.

Montgomery Bruce

There's only one free track available now, but this new album by Montgomery Bruce (who I hadn't heard of until I started searching for Christmas music) offers a free track on last.fm. Here's the link directly:

The First Noel by Montgomery Bruce

I'm always looking for stuff like this, it's very different and I get burned out from the usual "traditional" holiday music.

CC

Doesn't seem to be Creative Commons licensed, so not a candidate for this list, sorry.

Jonathan Coulton

Hey there!

With some Internet sleuthing, I found Uwe Hermann and saw that you played JoCo.

I'm with a band called Beatnik Turtle and they're a lot like Jonathan Coulton music-wise. They're doing a "Thing A Day" like him called "TheSongOfTheDay" which they started back in January. They have kinda off-the-wall, catchy songs like "Star Wars", "I'm Sorry The Warp Gate Sucked Away Our Son", "What We Need Is Some Interns In Here".

Anyway, every song is all podsafe and I was thinking with over 200+ songs, if you're looking for some fun music for a future podcast, to give us a shout - either by writing me or writing the us at www.TheSongOfTheDay.com

Thanks!
Matt

Bit late for this year but found your page before christmas which lead me to a few albums I hadn't discovered. Just found The X-Dump have a christmas EP out(http://netlabel.x-dump.com/#XD-NETS-002) which I find as I start to ween of christmas music for this year. Doesn't say on the site but I believe they use the CC liscence.

Link

Hm, the site doesn't seem to be available anymore. If anyone finds an updated link, please let me know.

Great resource!

I began searching for free Christmas music last month, and this was one of the first sites I came across. I've managed to get a lot of great music from the links on this site.

I also used your list as a basis for my own site at http://freechristmasmusic.googlepages.com. I list more than Creative Commons songs - I'm actually trying to compile a list of all Christmas music that is freely and legally downloadable. The site also contains a search engine to search through the listed web pages.

Try it out, and please let me know if you find it useful.

Merry Christmas everyon!

Hi Jeff,

thanks for the comment! I added a link to your site, and also added some more songs for 2006 ;-)

I'll only list Creative Commons songs here, though. People who want free-but-not-creative-commons songs can now browse your site :)

Cheers, Uwe.

Cheers, Uwe.
