Nexuiz - a fast-paced, GPL'd ego shooter

Nexuiz screenshot

Although I'm not a "gamer", I enjoy playing computer games from time to time. First-person shooters are especially well-suited for relaxing after a long and exhausting day ;-)

IMHO a very good choice, if you're looking for a fun Free Software first-person shooter running on Linux, is Nexuiz.

Nexuiz

  • is GPL'd (and not only the code, but also the data!)
  • is based on the Darkplaces engine, which in turn is based on the Quake engine
  • should be packaged for Debian sooner or later
  • has an unpronouncable name, which is always a bonus ;-)

Nexuiz version 1.5 has recently been released, which features new maps, new characters, better AI and lots more. Check it out!

xbubble: xlibs-dev transition done

xbubble screenshot

Just a quick update on Amaya Rodrigo's recent post on Planet Debian about xbubble's upstream author sending a patch for the Debian xlibs-dev transition: I have uploaded a (hopefully) fixed version of the package yesterday => one step closer to the end of the transition.

Addicting game, btw., give it a try!

Flickr + Memory = Memry

OMFG! Only yesterday I said there's no really nice Flash website out there. I might have to reconsider.

I just found Memry, a memory game written in Flash, which uses flickr images tagged with a given keyword. Very nice idea. Ahh, I like open APIs and the creative things people do with them...

Minesweeper is NP-complete

KMines screenshot

In the year 2000, Richard Kaye published a paper in which proved that Minesweeper is NP-complete. He has some very nice slides which demonstrate how the proof works.

Later, he also proved that Infinite Minesweeper is Turing-complete (PDF).

I'm so waiting for some kid to solve the P=NP problem by playing minesweeper...

My Wesnoth Replays Online [Update]

Wesnoth screenshot

Battle for Wesnoth seems to become a real threat for the Debian project. More and more Debian developers get sucked into the world of elves, dwaves, orcs, zombies and mages — and only few return...

On a related note: I uploaded my Wesnoth game replays (210 KB) for everyone to enjoy. I'm currently playing the Heir To The Throne campaign and finished 16 of 26 levels so far.

For those of you who want to save the money they usually spend in the cinema — grab some beer and watch Wesnoth replays with your friends ;-)

Update 2006-06-01: Added link to the canonical location of my replays. I now provide replays for the complete Heir to the throne campaign, others will follow.
